Why we lose friends when we grow older?

I’m not trying to have a depressing tone when writing this, but just stating the facts as is.

I’ve lost so many friends since the end of high school, and even more since I went on an exchange program to the US in 2010. But I’m not the type of person that goes around and says, “don’t regret losing people that don’t want to be a part of our lives, to begin with”. I’ve held on to many friendships for years, but it is completely normal to lose friends and it is impossible to maintain all friendships whatever you do.

Why We Lose Friends As We Grow Older:

1. Priorities Change

Obviously, our lives are changing day in day out. Priorities keep changing positions. Your friendship with a person may be your top list in day one, and the next it’s finding a job. which leads to #2

2. Increasing Responsibilities

It comes to a point in life when responsibilities start building up more and more. For me, it’s working on my thesis 20 hours out of 24. So, the lack of social life is growing exponentially, and you can’t talk to your friends like you used to when things were not as tough

3. Removing ‘toxic friends’

Another reason why we lose friends; some friends develop a toxic relationship, We discover more things about their character that doesn’t match with our values. While there are others that keep pushing you to be the best that you are, and make you put their goals ahead of them

4. Career/Educational Change and advancement

Another reason we lose friends after high school is that we develop a certain interest in other things that others may not like or even a major. I know a couple of people that went into a major they didn’t want, just so to stay with their friends.

5. Life happens!

Sometimes, the unexpected occurrences take place. They develop different pressures that we feel we can’t keep up with.

6. Maturity kicks in/ Habits change

Life as I said, is full of surprises. The ability of a person to grow up and not like stuff is normal, but it can affect the bond between the friends whom you used to do these things together. One tends to grow apart gradually since common interests are no longer there.

7. Commitments Like Relationships/Marriage

Most friends tend to feel left out like they have been ‘replaced’ by the ‘serious’ commitment at hand. Since you reduced attention and availability to be with your friends. To concentrate on your new commitment.

In the end, some friendships grow stronger with time, because you know they will always have your back, but some don’t and we all do lose friends at some point.

Much love,
xoxo
